First Steps
To be eligible to take the exam the registered nurse must have a current licensure, and a hospice and palliative nursing “practice of 500 hours in the most recent 12 months or 1,000 hours in the most recent 24 hours before applying for the examination” (Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center [HPCC], 2016, p. 9)
Obtain and read the Candidate Handbook at the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center.
Choose your date for taking the CHPN exam - see button below, and on page 2 of the CHPN. When ready, apply for the exam at the appropriate time. Now study!
“To gain admission to the Assessment Center, you must present two forms of identification” (HPCC, 2016, p. 4). One must be government issued, current with photo, and second ID card must have your name and signature on it (HPCC, 2016, p. 4). “The Certification Examination for Hospice and Palliative Nurses is made up of 150 multiple-choice questions, 135 of which are scored and 15 of which comprise a non-scored pre-test” (HPCC, 2016, p. 9). “You will be permitted three hours to complete this examination” (HPCC, 2016, p. 9).

- Consider taking a practice exam, that can be purchased through AMP.
- Consider taking the CHPN certification review course. This one day course, or online course, can be purchased through Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA)
